Get ready to sit on the edge of your seat, yet again: The Housemaid sequel is officially in development!

Just a few weeks after The Housemaid hit theaters on Dec. 19, Lionsgate announced that production on the movie's sequel, titled The Housemaid's Secret, will begin in 2026. Just like the first movie was based on author Freida McFadden's bestselling novel of the same name, the second film will be adapted from McFadden's 2023 novel.

Sydney Sweeney, who starred in and executive produced The Housemaid, is reprising her role as Millie Calloway. In addition to Sweeney's return, her costar Michele Morrone is also confirmed to again star as Enzo, while Paul Feig will direct and produce.

While an official synopsis for The Housemaid’s Secret movie has not yet been released, the book centers around Millie finding a job with a new wealthy couple who is also deeply troubled.

Here's everything to know about The Housemaid sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret.

Warning: The Housemaid spoilers below!

What will The Housemaid’s Secret be about?

Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway in The Housemaid.

The Housemaid's Secret will be an adaption of the second book in McFadden's The Housemaid series. In the first book and movie, Millie is a convicted felon trying to restart her life when she meets Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried), who is looking for a maid.

As Millie embarks on her job, she quickly develops feelings for Nina's husband, Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). At the same time, Nina seems to have taken out all of her frustrations on Millie, leaving her looking like a crazed, emotional mess. Andrew begins to feel both sympathetic and longing for Millie and leaves Nina for the maid.

However, McFadden's book takes a twisted turn when it's revealed that Andrew is an abusive husband who locks Nina in a closet for hours and days at a time. The book and movie end with Millie learning the dark truth and both women get their revenge by killing Andrew (although the way they kill him differs in the book and the movie).

McFadden's sequel follows a similar tale of a wealthy, but sick, woman, Wendy Garrick, looking for a way to escape her abusive husband, Douglas Garrick, who hired Millie as a maid. However, in true McFadden nature, the original story isn't always what it seems, and the book unfolds with Millie questioning everything she knows about the Garricks.

"I’ve done this before. I can protect Mrs Garrick while keeping my own secrets locked up safe," the book's description reads, from Millie's point of view. "Douglas Garrick has done wrong. He is going to pay. It’s simply a question of how far I’m willing to go."

Sydney Sweeney during 2025 CinemaCon on April 01, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada ; Michele Morrone attends the premiere of "Another Simple Favor" on March 07, 2025 in Austin, Texas.

Both Sweeney and Morrone are confirmed to reprise their roles as Millie and Enzo, respectively. While Millie worked as a housemaid in the first film, Enzo was the landscaper who knew Andrew's dark secrets and helped free Nina.

Before the sequel was officially announced, Sweeney told PEOPLE that she was eager to return in potential sequels (the series also includes the short story The Housemaid's Wedding and the 2024 novel, The Housemaid Is Watching).

"I would love to," Sweeney said. "I was such a huge fan of the books, so I would be just as happy as everyone else being able to see more Housemaids come to life and getting to explore more of Millie."

In addition to Sweeney and Morrone returning for the sequel, Feig will also continue serving as the director.

"It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with The Housemaid and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew," Feig said in a press release on Jan. 6. "We’re lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie’s journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences."

However, because the second book no longer follows Nina's story (and Andrew is dead), Seyfried and Sklenar are not expected to return. Although she won't be the lead in The Housemaid's Secret, Seyfried declared that she wants to make a cameo.

"I almost guarantee that I'm gonna be some small cameo in it," Seyfried said of the sequel in an interview with Variety at the 2026 Palm Springs International Film Festival. "I really want to see how she keeps Nina Winchester in her pocket, because I will jump the f--- back into that."

When will The Housemaid’s Secret come out?

A premiere date for The Housemaid's Secret has not yet been revealed. In the Jan. 6 press release, Lionsgate announced that The Housemaid's Secret has "been in development for the past few months."

The filming timeline has also not been shared, but Lionsgate is "planning a 2026 production start."

The production company has deals with both Starz and Prime Video to offer them first streaming rights, but they have not confirmed which platforms the movie will eventually be available to stream on.
