Stanley Tucci says the stereotypical roles being offered to him as an Italian-American actor made him "despondent" early on in his career

He reveals just how he was able to break out of that typecast

The actor has gone on to achieve critical and commercial success in a number of films

Stanley Tucci is speaking candidly about being repeatedly cast as Italian stereotypes early on in his career, saying the pattern left him feeling creatively frustrated and "despondent."

Speaking on the Monday, June 1 episode of The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, 65-year-old Tucci noted that in the 1980s and 1990s, he played several mob-adjacent tough guys and gangsters.

"I was despondent. I was insulted," Tucci said of the roles being offered to him. "You know, that was a very different time in America. Italians were still viewed as — everyone was connected to the mob, right? And if you had a dark complexion, like I did and do, you were instantly — especially with an Italian last name — you were instantly pigeonholed, and that was it. You weren't going to do anything else."

Doing theater, he added, was "kind of a salvation in a way."

"But there did come a point [when] I started making some okay money," Tucci added. "And I just refused to do any more gangster roles. I just wouldn't do it."

The award-winning multihyphenate actor has since made a name for himself in acting and also in his love for Italy, as highlighted in his culinary travel series Tucci in Italy (which airs on National Geographic), as well as his bestselling Italian cookbooks and memoirs.
