Sepideh Moafi looks back on playing Gigi Ghorbani in The L Word: Generation Q and her experience working with costar Jennifer Beals

"I just love the freedom and the wildness, and the aliveness of Gigi," she tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview

The show followed a queer group of friends in Los Angeles

Sepideh Moafi made a few good friends while working on The L Word: Generation Q.

The actress, 40, looks back on playing Gigi Ghorbani in the sequel to the landmark LGBTQ+ show, The L Word.

"Oh my God, I just love that character. I love the freedom that she unleashed in me," she tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview.

“You come out of every role and you're different. You're more open, you're more porous, you're more alive as a result of living inside of this person who is not you," the actress continues. "It's a weird thing. And I just love the freedom and the wildness, and the aliveness of Gigi."

Moafi shares that she also had a special connection with a few of her costars. “I love, love, loved working with Jen Beals," she says of the actress who starred as Bette Porter in all six seasons of the original Showtime series from 2004 to 2009.

Beals reprised her role in the sequel and also executive produced. She and Moafi's characters had a romantic relationship in the sequel series.

Moafi also mentions her costar Arienne Mandi, calling her “one of my close friends still to this day.”

Generation Q, like its predecessor, follows a queer group of friends who live in Los Angeles. The reboot aired for three seasons from 2019 to 2023.

Moafi praises the show for its approach to intimacy scenes, saying it allowed her to explore those scenes “with a safe structure, vibe and energy, and such respect amongst colleagues.”

“It was really cool because sex scenes can be really uncomfortable. And we had fun, as much fun as you can have. They're technical as f---, but it felt really comfortable and loose,” she says.

Moafi spoke about working with Beals in a 2017 interview with Vogue. "She was amazing. She’s a true collaborator, and she’s extremely humble. We have a really great rapport both on- and off-screen, so it was very easy to work with her," she said of her former costar.

“We enjoy each other as people, and that always helps," the actress added, before sharing their common interest. "I started out in opera and then theater, so process is huge to me. I love filming, of course, but also I love the work that goes on behind the scenes, and Jennifer is the same way. It just felt very fresh and playful and safe."

Moafi currently stars as Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi in season 2 of The Pitt.

The actress previously told PEOPLE about her early days on set of the medical drama, saying, "I was a huge fan of the first season. I was so intimidated walking in and I was welcomed with open arms. There's such warmth and support at all times on the show."
