They are poise, they are grace, they are former pageant queens of the United States!

Olivia Culpo kicked off her career as Miss Universe, and Oprah Winfrey has credited her early pageant days in the '70s with paving the way for her burgeoning talk show career. Even Matthew McConaughey has memorable story about the time he nearlybecame a pageant king himself.

In 2017, Berry shared a throwback photo from her Miss World days on Instagram, captioning the 1986 photo, "Where it all began."

Here's a look back at the journeys of stars who once competed in pageants.

Then known as Miss Ohio, Berry competed for Miss USA in 1986. As the Academy Award-winning actress recalled to W magazinein September 2016, her pageant past has a unique origin story.

"Actually, my boyfriend at the time wanted a beauty pageant girlfriend. So he entered me, and I got this letter in the mail saying, 'You are a finalist in the Miss [Teen] Ohio,' and I thought, 'Uh, what is this?' " Berry said. "And then he told me, 'Oh, by the way, I sent your prom picture in and now you have to go.' "

She continued, "I ended up winning. And once you start winning these things, it's like a snowball. And you have to go to the next one, and if you [win] there, you go to the next one, and I kept winning all the way until the Miss USA pageant, where I did not win. I was first runner-up to Christy Fichtner. And that ended my beauty pageant career."

Her mom and dad were also the ones she turned to months later when her reign abruptly ended.

"Luckily, I have a tremendous family, and in times of crisis, that's who you need to depend on," she said. "You can do anything when you've got a team around you."

However, her journey came full circle when, in 2015, the Miss America CEO welcomed the Ugly Betty actress back to judge the pageant.
