Salisbury Terrace in York has been closed while repairs take place

A burst water main which flooded several streets in York has caused "significant damage" to the road surface, according to Yorkshire Water.

Salisbury Terrace remains closed while the 21in (53cm) diameter pipe and road surface are repaired following the incident on Sunday.

Yokshire Water said people could still access the road via Lincoln Street and temporary access to Balfour Street, which also flooded on Sunday night, had been set up via Swinerton Avenue.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "We're working to get everything back to normal as soon as possible."

The force of the water from the main damaged the tarmac and washed away the material below

North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (NYFRS) crews also attended the scene at about 19:30 BST on Sunday.

NYFRS said crews pumped out the basement of a pub and blocked water access from an affected property.

The flood had affected Balfour Street and two premises, they added.
