Princess Diana once described her honeymoon with King Charles as “blissful” in a letter to a school friend. Years later, she shared a much different account of those early days of marriage. The late Princess of Wales dealt with painful feelings behind the scenes. A recently uncovered letter from that trip, which sold at auction for about $5,330 in July, brought those early memories back into the spotlight.

Princess Diana revealed she became ‘obsessed’ with Camilla during her honeymoon with Charles

The royal couple, Charles and Diana, spent 12 days aboard the royal yacht Britannia following their July 1981 wedding. Diana later told Morton, “At night, I dreamt of Camilla the whole time. I was obsessed by Camilla totally.” Before the wedding, she found a goodbye bracelet Charles planned to give Camilla Parker Bowles. During the honeymoon, she said she saw two photographs of Camilla fall from Charles’s diary while they compared schedules.

Diana also knew that Camilla had given Charles a pair of custom-made cufflinks, according to royal biographer Catherine Mayer. Mayer said Charles became upset after he lost one cufflink before the pre-wedding ball at Buckingham Palace. Charles later wore the cufflinks during the honeymoon, which upset Diana. She recalled asking, “Camilla gave you those, didn’t she?” before Charles replied, “Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend.”

The royal couple also spent much of the trip apart. Charles wrote from the yacht that “Marriage is very jolly” before describing how Diana chatted with sailors and cooks while he stayed alone reading books by Laurens van der Post. After the cruise, they visited Balmoral, where Diana smiled and told reporters she would “highly recommend” married life. Later, she admitted that loneliness, insecurity, and bulimia made her honeymoon far more difficult than it appeared.

During her 1995 BBC One Panorama interview, Diana also spoke about bulimia and referred to it as a “secret disease.” “It was a symptom of what was going on in my marriage,” she said, adding that people had misunderstood her struggle. Charles and Diana separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996. During that period, both publicly acknowledged relationships outside their marriage, including Charles’ long-term relationship with Camilla. Charles married Camilla in 2005, and she became Queen Camilla following his accession to the throne in 2022. Looking back, Catherine Mayer said the marriage was doomed from the start because Charles and Diana barely understood each other when they married.
