Dominik Mysterio Says Seth Rollins Storyline Changed His Original WWE Debut Plans

Dominik Mysterio has revealed that his original WWE debut was supposed to look very different before a storyline with Seth Rollins accelerated those plans.

The Judgment Day star explained that the opportunity arrived so quickly during 2020 that he had little input into how he was introduced on television.

Speaking with Ariel Helwani, Mysterio reflected on how the pandemic-era angle with Rollins reshaped his path before he even had the chance to establish his own identity.

Long before becoming “Dirty Dom,” Mysterio expected to follow his father’s footsteps by debuting under a traditional lucha libre mask. He even had custom masks made and trained while wearing them to prepare for that possibility.

“Yeah, when I first started training, I had masks made.”

However, those plans changed once WWE fast-tracked him into the storyline alongside Rey Mysterio against Seth Rollins.

“It all happened so fast with the Seth Rollins storyline and me helping my dad, with me being a babyface. I didn’t have the chance to pick my name and music.”

Mysterio admitted he still wanted to make his first appearance wearing a mask, but ultimately accepted that WWE fans had already watched him grow up on television since he was eight years old.

“I wanted to debut with the mask, but also people have seen me without a mask since I was 8.”

Rather than fully abandon the idea, he decided to flip lucha tradition on its head.

“Everyone comes out with the mask and leaves it on. Let me come out with the mask and take it off… do a little Dirty Dom of it.”

Before making his debut, Mysterio also trained extensively while wearing the mask in case WWE chose that direction.

Originally, his career path included training in Japan as a Young Boy, working on the independent circuit, and eventually developing in NXT before reaching the main roster. Instead, the Rollins rivalry led directly to a Street Fight at SummerSlam 2020 and a permanent spot on WWE’s main roster.

Looking back, the change altered far more than his entrance attire.
